One of the most rewarding things about the art of photography for me lies in finding a new and different way of seeing the familiar. One day in late fall I was wandering around a small waterfall. I stopped for a moment to absorb and observe the moment. I stood there  mesmerized by the sound and the motion. Gradually this composition evolved before me and I was moved to create this image.

It has been a busy week this week as we prepared, printed and shipped over 550 prints for various clients. Here is what that looks like.

“Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.” – Richard P. Feynman

This Spring I was sitting at the table, in our breakfast room, and looking out the window at the dogwood tree which grows just outside. I stared at the tree for several minutes and all at once I grabbed my camera and went outside to make this image. I find that the creative process works best for me after a few minutes of quietly contemplating my subject.

“There is another alphabet, whispering from every leaf, singing from every river, shimmering from every sky.” ― Dejan Stojanovic

Just back from a week in the Smoky Mountains. I find the edges of the streams and rivers cutting through the forest and filled with boulders very both peaceful and artistically inspiring.

“How cunningly nature hides every wrinkle of her inconceivable antiquity under roses and violets and morning dew!”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my favorite ways to explore nature is on my belly in the dew at dawn!!

“The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him”. ~Auguste Rodin

The surprise lily is one of my favorite flowers. The petals almost look like brush strokes. There is great joy in exploring a flower and discovering all the possibilities among the patterns, shapes and colors. It is the easiest way I know to get into the creative “zone”.

“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day. ” Henry David Thoreau

I love hiking in the forest in deep fog. Sometimes finding images in these conditions can be difficult at first. This is especially true if you have a preconceived idea of what you will see and photograph.  I have found however, that if I accept the fog, the light and the obscured view, images abound….

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.”

― William Blake

Why do I photograph nature? I find great joy in discovering moments such as this in nature, and great satisfaction in sharing them. Maybe I can make someone’s day a little better as a result of sharing an image.

This morning while at one of my favorite sunrise spots, I considered a number of compositions. Then I decided to stand under the tree I was next to and use the overhanging limbs in the image.

“In every landscape should reside jewels of abstract art waiting to be discovered.” – Melissa Brown

I arose before dawn and traveled to one of my favorite places along the river. The interplay of morning sky and reflected foliage was miraculous…..
