“Human subtelty will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does Nature, because in her inventions, nothing is lacking and nothing is superfluous.”
Leonardo da Vinci

My “Artist Sense” has always been attracted to and delighted in the details of nature. For me they are every bit as amazing as the grand landscape.

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature — the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

From a trip I took to the Grand Tetons a few years ago.

On my travels this month I made a stop at Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area. It had been several years since I had visited. It was like seeing an old friend again.

“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Smoky Mountains is one of the most magnificent areas in the country.  Despite The Smoky Mountains’ awe inspiring vistas I seem to be drawn to photograph the intimate landscapes as much as anything. I created this image while hiking and exploring along the edge of a stream late one afternoon

I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.  ~John Muir

This image was created while exploring the structure of this plant on a hillside  one morning. I take as much joy in these macro explorations as I do in my larger scale nature photographic treks.

“Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so that each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.” – Richard P. Feynman

This Spring I was sitting at the table, in our breakfast room, and looking out the window at the dogwood tree which grows just outside. I stared at the tree for several minutes and all at once I grabbed my camera and went outside to make this image. I find that the creative process works best for me after a few minutes of quietly contemplating my subject.

“Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature.” by Gerard De Nerval

Not far from my home is a field of daisies that grows next to a forest. I visit it each year and make photographs for hours. Each year I discover something new

“How cunningly nature hides every wrinkle of her inconceivable antiquity under roses and violets and morning dew!”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my favorite ways to explore nature is on my belly in the dew at dawn!!
