Measure life not in how many breaths you take
but how many times it gets taken away….

“The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him”. ~Auguste Rodin

The surprise lily is one of my favorite flowers. The petals almost look like brush strokes. There is great joy in exploring a flower and discovering all the possibilities among the patterns, shapes and colors. It is the easiest way I know to get into the creative “zone”.

I arose before dawn and traveled to one of my favorite places along the river. The interplay of morning sky and reflected foliage was miraculous…..

Early one morning this past fall I hiked out to a bluff at Big South Fork where I like to photograph. It offers so many photographic opportunities that I find myself drawn to it anytime that I am in the area. This time however it was so socked in with fog that I finally decided to head back. It was on the walk back that the fog shrouded forest inspired me to create this image.

On May 2-4 2014, I will be leading a workshop at Big South National Recreation Area where this image was created. You can find the details by clicking HERE .

“See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…we need silence to be able to touch souls.”
