“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn…”- Henry David Thoreau

There is nothing quite like hiking a trail in the still cool air of morning. Here is an image from an early morning hike that I made this past spring in north Alabama.

I am back from an 8 day whirlwind trip through the beautiful state of Oregon! My travels took me from the Columbia River Gorge area all the way down the Oregon coast. I am still sorting through the 3,700+ images I made there. Here are a few of the images!

“Nature can put on a thrilling show. The stage is vast, the lighting is dramatic, the extras are innumerable, and the budget for special effects is absolutely unlimited.” ― Yann Martel, Life of Pi

“How cunningly nature hides every wrinkle of her inconceivable antiquity under roses and violets and morning dew!”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him”. ~Auguste Rodin

The surprise lily is one of my favorite flowers. The petals almost look like brush strokes. There is great joy in exploring a flower and discovering all the possibilities among the patterns, shapes and colors. It is the easiest way I know to get into the creative “zone”.

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way. Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.”

― William Blake

Why do I photograph nature? I find great joy in discovering moments such as this in nature, and great satisfaction in sharing them. Maybe I can make someone’s day a little better as a result of sharing an image.

This morning while at one of my favorite sunrise spots, I considered a number of compositions. Then I decided to stand under the tree I was next to and use the overhanging limbs in the image.
