“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.”  ~John Muir

I arrived along the river at sunrise and spent the entire day wandering along its edge making images. As so often happens it was almost dark before I began the hike back. I hadn’t gone very far when I saw these boulders reflecting in the water.  I paused to create this image and “reflect” upon the day with them.

“It’s on the strength of observation and reflection that one finds
a way. So we must dig and delve unceasingly.”
~Claude Monet

This year’s fall season winds quietly down along the Little River. I love the quiet time that I spend alone in nature creating images at this time of year. Things slow down and my image making becomes more contemplative.

“See how nature – trees, flowers, grass – grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence…we need silence to be able to touch souls.”

~Mother Teresa of Calcutta

As a photographer I am always in search of that moment when the light brings a magical dimension to the image I have composed. Whenever these elements come together I get just as excited as when I began this artistic journey to create images of nature with my camera many years ago….

Just returned from one of my “almost” annual trips to Texas. This wasn’t the best year for flowers  (though the spring display of flowers is incredible even in a bad year) so I devoted more time to exploring the Hill Country that Texas is so famous for. Here are a few images from this trip and below the WordPress gallery be sure to check out the link to one of my Texas portfolios. Enjoy!

What a way to spend a day!!

Recently, while working on our upcoming book Treasures Untold, Paul Kingsbury and I visited this waterfall in middle Tennessee.  In my book, I will share photographs from some of my favorite spots in Tennessee.

Late this November, after a long day of photography in North Alabama, I packed up my gear, hoisted my pack and began the hike to my car. I had not gone far along the river bank when I noticed these maple leaves. They were on a small sapling growing out from the boulders near the rivers edge. I stopped, dropped my pack and set up the tripod again. The right composition wasn’t readily visible and I found myself working around the leaves until I settled on this composition. Sometimes just telling myself that I am done for the day releases my creativity and I see images I might otherwise have walked past. Often I find that I start back down the trail and spot something else to photograph over and over again all the way back. A thirty minute hike can turn into an hour and a half without even being aware of the passing of time.

You know you are doing something you love when you can’t stop. No matter how tired and hungry you are….
