While I was in Oregon I made a side trip to one of my favorite destinations, Redwoods National Park in California. I watched the weather as I approached the area from the north. The closer I got the brighter and clearer the day became. Bright contrasty conditions are generally terrible for photography in the forest. I pressed on anyway and when I arrived at the trailhead the light was so harsh that I considered not making the 4 mile hike I had originally planned.

“I’m here now might as well go for it and hope for another gift from nature” I thought. I hiked about a mile and a half  and just as I reached the ridge and began my descent toward the ocean a beautiful fog rolled in from the ocean. The forest was aglow with beautiful light, a gift from Nature.

“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn…”- Henry David Thoreau

There is nothing quite like hiking a trail in the still cool air of morning. Here is an image from an early morning hike that I made this past spring in north Alabama.

I am following Nature without being able to grasp her … ~ Claude Monet

By stripping away the familiar characteristics of color, black and white photography of nature reveals something new. It highlights a different aspect of the relationships between shapes, form, contrast and composition in the natural world.

I recently added a black and white gallery to the website you can view it HERE

“Nature is not only what is visible to the eye – it also presents the inner pictures of the soul – the images on the reverse side of the eye.” (Edvard Munch)

When I explore the smaller details of nature with my camera I am in reality experiencing the moment fully and expressing that experience as an image.

“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Smoky Mountains is one of the most magnificent areas in the country.  Despite The Smoky Mountains’ awe inspiring vistas I seem to be drawn to photograph the intimate landscapes as much as anything. I created this image while hiking and exploring along the edge of a stream late one afternoon

I enjoy finding places that may be overlooked by most. I spent some time recently in Indiana hiking through ancient stone canyons that were carved by glacial meltwaters during the Pleistocene Epoch. I followed one gorge as it flowed into the next and one stunning view gave way to another. It was an amazing experience.
